After four straight road games, the Victoria Generals were back in front of their home fans at Riverside Stadium Tuesday night for the first time since June 25. They were outlasted 6-4 by the Seguin River Monsters and fell to 14-9 on the year.
Ben Baker-Livingston got the start for Victoria on the mound. He retired the first six River Monsters in order to start the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, Victoria infielder Sampson Pugh drew a walk and became the gameƵs first baserunner. However, catcher Colin Cymbalista flied out to center field in the next at-bat to end the inning. Both clubs were scoreless heading into the third.
Baker-Livingston issued his first walk of the game with one out in the third inning. It turned out to be SeguinƵs only baserunner of the frame and the game remained scoreless heading into the bottom half of the third.
Victoria second baseman Logan Jenkins led off the bottom of the third and provided the first hit of the game for either team. He took a 2-1 pitch over the left center field wall for a solo home run to put the Generals ahead 1-0.
It was JenkinsƵ first homer of the season.
ƵI was just trying to do my job and help the guys out any way I can. I just happen to run into one and hit a home run,Ƶ Jenkins said.
Later in the inning, outfielder Damien Whitfield singled to center and advanced to third on a single to right by Diego Diaz.
ƵIƵm hitting leadoff for our team, so IƵm just trying to find a way to get on base and use my speed to get around and score,Ƶ Whitfield said.
With only one out, Whitfield scored from third on an RBI groundout by Travis Bragg. Diaz advanced to second on the play and later stole third base during Dante TurgeonƵs at-bat. Turgeon put the ball in play and Diaz scored VictoriaƵs third and final run of the inning on a Seguin throwing error.
The Generals took a 3-0 edge into the fourth. Baker-Livingston issued a walk and surrendered his first hit of the game. He then threw a wild pitch to the third batter he faced, and both Seguin base runners advanced on the play. From there, he retired three straight batters and allowed only one of those runners to score.
The Generals led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Pugh led off the inning by hitting an infield chopper to the third base side of the Seguin infield. An errant throw to first sailed into right field foul territory, and Pugh advanced to third on the play.
He later scored on an RBI single to center field by Cymbalista. Victoria threatened for more in the frame with two outs and two runners in scoring position, but could not add to its 4-1 lead.
Baker Livingston struggled on the mound in top of the fifth. He faced four batters and recorded one out before being relieved by Hunter Nichols. Nichols registered the final two outs of the inning and the Generals lead remained intact, 4-3. Livingston pitched four and one-third innings, allowed two earned runs on two hits, and struck out four.
Things got difficult for Victoria in the top of the eighth. With Generals reliever James Janak on the mound, SeguinƵs first three batters reached safely to load the bases with nobody out. A 4-3 infield putout plated the tying run to make the score 4-4 with two runners in scoring position. Janak surrendered a two-run single in the next at-bat and Seguin took its first lead of the game, 6-4.
Victoria went to its third reliever of the game, Braden Harris, to get out of the eighth inning jam. He struck out the only batter he faced, and the Generals trailed 6-4 going into the home half of the frame.
Victoria opened the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back singles from Justin Vossos and Pugh. With the bases loaded and two out, Whitfield had an opportunity to tie the game or give the Generals the lead again. However, he stranded all three runners with a lineout to center on the first pitch of his at-bat.
ƵI was just looking for a pitch to hit. I knew he had to come pitch to me with the bases loaded, he had no room to put me on base,Ƶ Whitfield said. ƵI got a first-pitch fastball, put a pretty good swing on it, the outfielder just so happened to have caught it.Ƶ
Still trailing 6-4, the Generals recorded a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. VictoriaƵs comeback bid fell short with a game ending strikeout by Vossos.
Victoria collected eight hits, while Seguin managed only five. Janak suffered the loss for the Generals. He surrendered three earned runs in 2/3 of an inning.
Victoria will have a chance to even the series Wednesday night at Riverside Park. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
