SHREVEPORT, La. òòò½ÊÓƵ” A large military parade is set Saturday, which happens to be President Donald Trumpòòò½ÊÓƵ™s 79th birthday.
But not everyone is celebrating. People across the country plan to protest what they call an abuse of power.
The "No King" protests will take place in several cities, including Shreveport. Organizers say itòòò½ÊÓƵ™s a day to protest against the Trump administration.
In Shreveport, the protest is set for Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. outside the Caddo Parish Courthouse on Texas Street. Other protests are planned in Ruston, Monroe, and Texarkana.
Shreveport police say they support free speech but want protests to stay peaceful.
"If there's something that you feel strongly about, you do have that right to exercise your free speech. However, what will not be tolerated is damaging property or hurting other individuals. You know your rights stop when you begin to infringe on other individuals rights. So but we don't foresee any issues. We will have some teams ready on standby, should an incident occur," said SPD PIO Cpl. Chris Bordelon.
"We are, as a police department, are very aware of some rallies that are going to be occurring in the downtown area. Chief (Wayne) Smith and his command staff have made preparations on how we'll handle these incidents. You know, we do want to encourage citizens to exercise their rights in a lawful manner. This is definitely something that we should do as American citizens," Bordelon said.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Bordelon said extra officers will be on standby in case things get out of hand. However, police say they do not expect any major problems.
