The City of Kingsportòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s Stormwater Department, with help from Kingsport Cultural Arts, is seeking local artists to hand-paint five storm drains within the city. The code changes require new or expanded septic systems to add another level of treatment that would reduce the amount of nitrate discharged into groundwater in areas that drain into one of the countyòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s 29 impaired streams. At higher concentrations, nitrate can cause algal blooms in waterways and can increase cancer risk in humans.
