City of VIctoria

The City of Victoria began a òòò½ÊÓƵœchlorine burnòòò½ÊÓƵ at 7 a.m. today (July 12), temporarily switching to chlorine-only water treatment, a process originally scheduled to take place Aug. 1 and that was moved up to help expedite the lifting of the current boil-water notice.

The city received approval from the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) late Friday afternoon, shortly after its Cityòòò½ÊÓƵ™s 3 p.m. press conference. Following receipt of TCEQòòò½ÊÓƵ™s approval, the City immediately notified local medical facilities. The chlorine burn was scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Saturday to give these facilities sufficient time to prepare, including allowing them to complete late evening scheduled dialysis treatments.

The chlorine burn is an annual maintenance procedure that uses elevated levels of chlorine to help maintain water quality and is a common and safe way to do so.

Important reminders:

òòò½ÊÓƵ¢òòò½ÊÓƵDialysis patients may need to change pretreatment processes for their dialysis machines.

òòò½ÊÓƵ¢òòò½ÊÓƵFish and aquariums owners may need to modify water conditioning procedures.

òòò½ÊÓƵ¢òòò½ÊÓƵSplash Pads remain safe and are not impacted by the current boil-water notice as they are treated directly with disinfectants separate from the cityòòò½ÊÓƵ™s water system.

While the increased chlorine level does not pose a health risk, residents should continue following all public health guidelines during the boil-water notice, including boiling water before consumption.

The city worked with the Victoria Office of Emergency Management to notify all hospitals, dialysis centers and pet stores about the boil water notice.
